Welcome to the Intro to Image Manipulation Class home page! This gallery showcases over 350 different artworks created by second and third quarter students at AIPX between Summer 2000 and Fall 2001. We've changed a few of the assignments since then, but this gallery can still help by showing A-level and B-level work using the very same competencies being taught in current classes. Think like a critic as you browse through the galleries. What do you think makes this work above average? What do you like? Not like? What seems trendy or gimmicky to you? What is timeless and first-class? What will sell a lot of products? What would you hang on your wall instead? It's okay if you don't love everything here, in fact that's a good thing. All we ask is that you try and show us how YOU would do it better, YOUR way! ;-) This class is a chance not only to learn new technical skills but also to start developing your voice as an artist. Have fun and take some risks as you explore the endless possibilities with Adobe Photoshop, and good luck on all your projects this quarter! -- AIPX Instructor Alison King

Due Week 2 Students use limited tools in Photoshop to create an indexed color image to replace the usual Zip Disk Icon. The icon is then replaced on the student's portfolio disk. |
Due Week 3 Students use the Rubber Stamp, Selection tools, Filters and other Photoshop tools to restore a badly-damaged photo of Harold the Beagle. Much harder than it looks! |
Due Week 4 Students use 3 source images on at least 5 layers in Photoshop to create an original collage. |
Due Week 5 Students use Photoshop's Paths feature to clip out a subject and place them in an entirely new context. The trick is to tweak colors, grain and shadows in both background and subjects so the eye is fooled into believing the new combination. |
Due Week 6 Students collage images together and transform visual elements beyond recognition to create magazine covers, editorial illustrations, book jackets, album covers, game box designs, movie posters, web splash screens and other commercial art applications. |
Due Week 7 Students use the Clipping Group technique to give depth and character to typography used in combination with images. |
Due Week 8 Students use the Layer Mask technique to create a collage on the theme of U.S Copyright Law. Students also research and write answers to a FAQ on Copyright Law to go along with the illustration. |
Due Week 9 Students use Duotones and Blend Modes to express mood in a book jacket design on the topic of multiple personality disorder. |
